The geometric multigrid method (GMG) is one of the most efficient solving techniques for discrete algebraic systems arising from elliptic partial differential equations. GMG utilizes a hierarchy of grids or discretizations and reduces the error at a number of frequencies simultaneously. Graphics processing units (GPUs) have recently burst onto the scientific computing scene as a technology that has yielded substantial performance and energy-efficiency improvements. A central challenge in implementing GMG on GPUs, though, is that computational work on coarse levels cannot fully utilize the capacity of a GPU. In this work, we perform numerical studies of GMG on CPU-GPU heterogeneous computers. Furthermore, we compare our implementation with an efficient CPU implementation of GMG and with the most popular fast Poisson solver, Fast Fourier Transform, in the cuFFT library developed by NVIDIA.

The modified ghost fluid method (MGFM) provides a robust and efficient interface treatment for various multi-medium flow simulations and some particular fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. However, this methodology for one specific class of FSI problems, where the structure is plate, remains to be developed. This work is devoted to extending the MGFM to treat compressible fluid coupled with a thin elastic plate. In order to take into account the influence of simultaneous interaction at the interface, a fluid-plate coupling system is constructed at each time step and solved approximately to predict the interfacial states. Then, ghost fluid states and plate load can be defined by utilizing the obtained interfacial states. A type of acceleration strategy in the coupling process is presented to pursue higher efficiency. Several one-dimensional examples are used to highlight the utility of this method over loosely-coupled method and validate the acceleration techniques. Especially, this method is applied to compute the underwater explosions (UNDEX) near thin elastic plates. Evolution of strong shock impacting on the thin elastic plate and dynamic response of the plate are investigated. Numerical results disclose that this methodology for treatment of the fluid-plate coupling indeed works conveniently and accurately for different structural flexibilities and is capable of efficiently simulating the processes of UNDEX with the employment of the acceleration strategy.

This paper presents high-resolution computations of a two-phase gas-solid mixture using a well-defined mathematical model. The HLL Riemann solver is applied to solve the Riemann problem for the model equations. This solution is then employed in the construction of upwind Godunov methods to solve the general initial-boundary value problem for the two-phase gas-solid mixture. Several representative test cases have been carried out and numerical solutions are provided in comparison with existing numerical results. To demonstrate the robustness, effectiveness and capability of these methods, the model results are compared with reference solutions. In addition to that, these results are compared with the results of other simulations carried out for the same set of test cases using other numerical methods available in the literature. The diverse comparisons demonstrate that both the model equations and the numerical methods are clear in mathematical and physical concepts for two-phase fluid flow problems.

A continuum hydrodynamic model has been used to characterize flowing active nematics. The behavior of such a system subjected to a weak steady shear is analyzed. We explore the director structures and flow behaviors of the system in flow-aligning and flow tumbling regimes. Combining asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations, we extend previous studies to give a complete characterization of the steady states for both contractile and extensile particles in flow-aligning and flow-tumbling regimes.  Another key prediction of this work is the role of the system size on the steady states of an active nematic system: if the system size is small, the velocity and the director angle files for both flow-tumbling contractile and extensile systems are similar to those of passive nematics; if the system is big, the velocity and the director angle files for flow-aligning contractile systems and tumbling extensile systems are akin to sheared passive cholesterics while they are oscillatory for flow-aligning extensile and tumbling contractile systems.

The generating function methods have been applied successfully to generalized Hamiltonian systems with constant or invertible Poisson-structure matrices. In this paper, we extend these results and present the generating function methods preserving the Poisson structures for generalized Hamiltonian systems with general variable Poisson-structure matrices. In particular, some obtained Poisson schemes are applied efficiently to some dynamical systems which can be written into generalized Hamiltonian systems (such as generalized Lotka-Volterra systems, Robbins equations and so on).

In this paper we find the solution of linear as well as nonlinear fractional partial differential equations using discrete Adomian decomposition method. Here we develop the discrete Adomian decomposition method to find the solution of fractional discrete diffusion equation, nonlinear fractional discrete Schrodinger equation, fractional discrete Ablowitz-Ladik equation and nonlinear fractional discrete Burger's equation. The obtained solution is verified by comparison with exact solution when $\alpha=1$.

Aiming at a complex multi-block structured grid, an efficient dynamic mesh generation method is presented in this paper, which is based on radial basis functions (RBFs) and transfinite interpolation (TFI). When the object is moving, the multi-block structured grid would be changed. The fast mesh deformation is critical for numerical simulation. In this work, the dynamic mesh deformation is completed in two steps. At first, we select all block vertexes with known deformation as center points, and apply RBFs interpolation to get the grid deformation on block edges. Then, an arc-lengthbased TFI is employed to efficiently calculate the grid deformation on block faces and inside each block. The present approach can be well applied to both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) problems. Numerical results show that the dynamic meshes for all test cases can be generated in an accurate and efficient manner.

In this paper, high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is used to solve the two-dimensional Euler equations. A shock-capturing method based on the artificial viscosity technique is employed to handle physical discontinuities. Numerical tests show that the shocks can be captured within one element even on very coarse grids. The thickness of the shocks is dominated by the local mesh size and the local order of the basis functions. In order to obtain better shock resolution, a straightforward $hp$-adaptivity strategy is introduced, which is based on the high-order contribution calculated using hierarchical basis. Numerical results indicate that the $hp$-adaptivity method is easy to implement and better shock resolution can be obtained with smaller local mesh size and higher local order.
