This article describes a number of velocity-based moving mesh numerical methods for multidimensional nonlinear time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). It consists of a short historical review followed by a detailed description of a recently developed multidimensional moving mesh finite element method based on conservation. Finite element algorithms are derived for both mass-conserving and non mass-conserving problems, and results shown for a number of multidimensional nonlinear test problems, including the second order porous medium equation and the fourth order thin film equation as well as a two-phase problem. Further applications and extensions are referenced.

The adaptive generalized Riemann problem (GRP) scheme for 2-D compressible fluid flows has been proposed in [J. Comput. Phys., 229 (2010), 1448–1466] and it displays the capability in overcoming difficulties such as the start-up error for a single shock, and the numerical instability of the almost stationary shock. In this paper, we will provide the accuracy study and particularly show the performance in simulating 2-D complex wave configurations formulated with the 2-D Riemann problems for compressible Euler equations. For this purpose, we will first review the GRP scheme briefly when combined with the adaptive moving mesh technique and consider the accuracy of the adaptive GRP scheme via the comparison with the explicit formulae of analytic solutions of planar rarefaction waves, planar shock waves, the collapse problem of a wedge-shaped dam and the spiral formation problem. Then we simulate the full set of wave configurations in the 2-D four-wave Riemann problems for compressible Euler equations [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 21 (1990), 593–630], including the interactions of strong shocks (shock reflections), vortex-vortex and shock-vortex etc. This study combines the theoretical results with the numerical simulations, and thus demonstrates what Ami Harten observed "for computational scientists there are two kinds of truth: the truth that you prove, and the truth you see when you compute" [J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2007), 185–193].

A data-driven model reduction strategy is presented for the representation of random polycrystal microstructures. Given a set of microstructure snapshots that satisfy certain statistical constraints such as given low-order moments of the grain size distribution, using a non-linear manifold learning approach, we identify the intrinsic low-dimensionality of the microstructure manifold. In addition to grain size, a linear dimensionality reduction technique (Karhunun-Loéve Expansion) is used to reduce the texture representation. The space of viable microstructures is mapped to a low-dimensional region thus facilitating the analysis and design of polycrystal microstructures. This methodology allows us to sample microstructure features in the reduced-order space thus making it a highly efficient, low-dimensional surrogate for representing microstructures (grain size and texture). We demonstrate the model reduction approach by computing the variability of homogenized thermal properties using sparse grid collocation in the reduced-order space that describes the grain size and orientation variability.

This paper is concerned with a new version of the Osher-Solomon Riemann solver and is based on a numerical integration of the path-dependent dissipation matrix. The resulting scheme is much simpler than the original one and is applicable to general hyperbolic conservation laws, while retaining the attractive features of the original solver: the method is entropy-satisfying, differentiable and complete in the sense that it attributes a different numerical viscosity to each characteristic field, in particular to the intermediate ones, since the full eigenstructure of the underlying hyperbolic system is used. To illustrate the potential of the proposed scheme we show applications to the following hyperbolic conservation laws: Euler equations of compressible gasdynamics with ideal gas and real gas equation of state, classical and relativistic MHD equations as well as the equations of nonlinear elasticity. To the knowledge of the authors, apart from the Euler equations with ideal gas, an Osher-type scheme has never been devised before for any of these complicated PDE systems. Since our new general Riemann solver can be directly used as a building block of high order finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin schemes we also show the extension to higher order of accuracy and multiple space dimensions in the new framework of P_NP_M schemes on unstructured meshes recently proposed in [9].

Acoustic scattering cross sections of smart furtive obstacles are studied and discussed. A smart furtive obstacle is an obstacle that, when hit by an incoming field, avoids detection through the use of a pressure current acting on its boundary. A highly parallelizable algorithm for computing the acoustic scattering cross section of smart obstacles is developed. As a case study, this algorithm is applied to the (acoustic) scattering cross section of a "smart” (furtive) simplified version of the NASA space shuttle when hit by incoming time-harmonic plane waves, the wavelengths of which are small compared to the characteristic dimensions of the shuttle. The solution to this numerically challenging scattering problem requires the solution of systems of linear equations with many unknowns and equations. Due to the sparsity of these systems of equations, they can be stored and solved using affordable computing resources. A cross section analysis of the simplified NASA space shuttle highlights three findings: i) the smart furtive obstacle reduces the magnitude of its cross section compared to the cross section of a corresponding "passive” obstacle; ii) several wave propagation directions fail to satisfactorily respond to the smart strategy of the obstacle; iii) satisfactory furtive effects along all directions may only be obtained by using a pressure current of considerable magnitude. To finite-difference model elastic wave propagation in a combined structure with solid, fluid and porous subregions, a set of modified Biot's equations are used, which can be reduced to the governing equations in solids, fluids as well as fluid-saturated porous media. Based on the modified Biot's equations, the field quantities are finite-difference discretized into unified forms in the whole structure, including those on any interface between the solid, fluid and porous subregions. For the discrete equations on interfaces, however, the harmonic mean of shear modulus and the arithmetic mean of the other parameters on both sides of the interfaces are used. These parameter averaging equations are validated by deriving from the continuity conditions on the interfaces. As an example of using the parameter averaging technique, a 2-D finite-difference scheme with a velocity-stress staggered grid in cylindrical coordinates is implemented to simulate the acoustic logs in porous formations. The finite difference simulations of the acoustic logging in a homogeneous formation agree well with those obtained by the analytical method. The acoustic logs with mud cakes clinging to the borehole well are simulated for investigating the effect of mud cake on the acoustic logs. The acoustic logs with a varying radius borehole embedded in a horizontally stratified formation are also simulated by using the proposed finite-difference scheme.

A code that models signals produced by charge-exchange reactions between fast ions and injected neutral beams in tokamak plasmas is described. With the fastion distribution function as input, the code predicts the efflux to a neutral particle analyzer (NPA) diagnostic and the photon radiance of Balmer-alpha light to a fastion Dα (FIDA) diagnostic. Reactions with both the primary injected neutrals and with the cloud of secondary "halo" neutrals that surround the beam are treated. Accurate calculation of the fraction of neutrals that occupy excited atomic states (the collisional-radiative transition equations) is an important element of the code. Comparison with TRANSP output and other tests verify the solutions. Judicious selection of grid size and other parameters facilitate efficient solutions. The output of the code has been validated by FIDA measurements on DIII-D but further tests are warranted.

The paper is concerned with the numerical solution of Schrödinger equations on an unbounded spatial domain. High-order absorbing boundary conditions for one-dimensional domain are derived, and the stability of the reduced initial boundary value problem in the computational interval is proved by energy estimate. Then a second order finite difference scheme is proposed, and the convergence of the scheme is established as well. Finally, numerical examples are reported to confirm our error estimates of the numerical methods.

A two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model has been employed to simulate the impingement of a liquid drop on a dry surface. For a range of Weber number, Reynolds number and low density ratios, multiple phases leading to breakup have been obtained. An analytical solution for breakup as function of Reynolds and Weber number based on the conservation of energy is shown to match well with the simulations. At the moment breakup occurs, the spread diameter is maximum; it increases with Weber number and reaches an asymptotic value at a density ratio of 10. Droplet breakup is found to be more viable for the case when the wall is non-wetting or neutral as compared to a wetting surface. Upon breakup, the distance between the daughter droplets is much higher for the case with a non-wetting wall, which illustrates the role of the surface interactions in the outcome of the impact.
